Modafinil (Provigil) in Bodybuilding and Sport

Most pro-bodybuilders and other advanced AAS users such as fighters, powerlifters and athletes use (beside peptides, insulin and steroids) an enormous list of ancillaries, If they use Trenbolone something to combat prolactin/progesterone and sleeping-aids against “trensomnia,” estrogen blockers and aromatase inhibitors if they use aromatisable roids, beta blockers against anxiety, anti-depressants, statins or others to control bloodlipids, thyroid hormones and a drug to combat insulin resistance if they use a lotta rhGH, painkillers to fight the intense pain of site-injections of roids and Synthol, muscle skeletal nerve relaxants, liver protectors etc etc. I posted before about Selegiline and such, this time an old but a nowadays rising compound called Modanifil.

Because it is such an old product, that was always very expensive, but because the raw pharmaceutical ingredient (API) and also the complete tabs both generic and branded are easily available from China and India.

Olympic Games

In 2003 Sprint champion Kelli White and six other American athletes flunked drug tests.White already faced the loss of two world championship gold medals because of modafinil use. The White also tested positive for modafinil at the national championships in June, when she also swept the 100 and 200 meters. White said she was prescribed modafinil for a sleeping disorder -- a claim ridiculed by international track officials after word emerged of other athletes using the banned stimulant.

Also testing positive for modafinil at the national track championships were sprinter Chryste Gaines, hurdler Sandra Glover, McEwen, and hurdler Eric Thomas of Houston.Hurdler Chris Phillips of Little Rock, Ark., tested positive for modafinil at the world championships.

White and Gaines where coached by Remy Korchemny, who also coached British sprinter Dwain Chambers, now facing a two-year suspension for THG. Phillips said Korchemny gave him a modafinil pill at the world championships to help him overcome jet lag. In November 2004, the U.S. Olympic gold medal for the 1600 meter relay was revoked and given to France because US athlete Calvin Harrison tested positive for modafinil.

BALCO

n email correspondence between BALCO owner Victor Conte and Remi Korchemny, the coach of disgraced sprinter Dwain Chambers, revealed they experimented with the levels of drugs athletes took. Korchemny reported that when one athlete took "the new S supplement (believed to be code for the narcolepsy drug modafinil) he ran like crazy".

Conte referred to his products as rocket fuel and warned taking "E" (believed to refer to the blood-boosting drug erythropoietin), required the athlete to drink water, water and water. Conte wrote: "E makes the blood thick and water dilutes the blood, the way to prevent any type of blood clot is to dilute the blood with water."

The evidence is being shown to athletes such as Tim Montgomery, Chryste Gaines, Michelle Collins and Alvin Harrison in an effort to gain their co-operation to help unravel the drugs ring. They are also being shown their own emails, payments, invoices and personal calendars detailing drug regimes and laboratory test results.

A grand jury has indicted Conte, Korchemny, Greg Anderson, who trains baseball star Barry Bonds, and BALCO vice president James Valente.

Provigil is approved only for narcolepsy, sleep apnea or for people who work irregular hours, but hidden among those who take it are pockets of healthy Americans taking it just to boost energy and enhance focus. It excites the mind so much that Provigil has been nicknamed "Viagra for the brain."

Modafinil has shown efficacy in, and is FDA approved for, treating daytime sleepiness associated with narcolepsy, sleep apnoea/hypopnoea syndrome, and shift work sleep disorder. Additional off-label uses include treatment of sedation and fatigue in depression, multiple sclerosis, myotonic dystrophy, opioid induced sleepiness and Parkinson’s disease. Further, modafinil has been used to treat spastic cerebral palsy, attention deficit hyperactivity disorder, and depression in monotherapy. Cognitive enhancement has been noted with modafinil in healthy volunteers. Neuroprotective qualities have been identified in mptp-animal-Parkinson models. The use of modafinil in reducing food intake has also been studied, with a role in treating obesity suggested.

Unlike dextroamphetamine and methylphenidate, there does not appear to be a risk of abuse associated with modafinil. Modafinil is a suggested treatment for amphetamine and cocaine dependence.

Military Applications.

As modafinil is banned in every major sporting league in the world, the only applicable non-medical use for performance enhancement is military operations. The United States Air Force currently has two go-pills, modafinil and Dexedrine, used to promote wakefulness during prolonged combat missions. Modafinil may be beneficial to populations such as emergency first responders: police officers, paramedics, and firefighters. Less-trained populations such as these would benefit from the enhanced physical and mental performance modafinil could potentially offer during high-stress, prolonged emergency situations.

Brands of Modafinil

The nomenclature for Modafinil is very complex. Modafinil's alertness properties are often marked in the manner in which it is named, often focused around the idea of vigilance and alertness. It is sold in different parts of the world under various brand names, some of which are below:

In Canada and Ecuador It is sold as Alertec. In Colombia, Ecuador, Honduras and Uruguay it is sold as Carim. In India it is sold as Provake, Modalert, Modapro and Modafil. In Austria and Switzerland it is sold as Modasomil. In Australia and New Zealand it is sold as Modavigil. In France, Denmark, Greece, Cyprus, Mexico, Netherlands, Portugal, Sweden, Norway, Turkey, Japan and is sold as Modiodal.

What could be the future of Modafinil?

The patent shows that there is an astonishing number of potential derivatives and that their (assumed) effective doses start as low as 1 mg (in humans). Time-released formulas are proposed there as well. They are said to reduce sleepiness and to affect eating behavior.

We must not forget that the numerous possible modafinil derivatives might not only differ in their dose-response behavior from each other but also in their spectrum of wanted and unwanted (side) effects. Skimming through the patent, you can see that we are speaking about an almost endless list of possible derivatives, the clinical effects of which are not entirely explored. I am pretty sure that blindly grabbing one of those derivatives could give you effects, you wouldn't entirely expect from modafinil and which could let you believe that you have taken a different drug.

We all know that that Modafinil has been (ab-)used by elite athletes. What I am much more interested in, is the potential for use and abuse in dietary supplements. Of course, no company with more than two neurons in their brains would put real modafinil into a OTC product. But: knowing that there are really LONG lists of dietary supplements that have been found to be adulterated / tainted with e.g sibutramine or sildenafil analogs, I wonder about the possibilities and the potential of modafinil derivatives to be used as secret "add-ons".

Modafinil was developed by Lafon Laboratories in the late 70s for use in narcolepsy. Now, among other conditions, it is applied in conditions such as ADHD. Since it's a medication for these conditions.

Modafinil, (also known as Provigil) is on prescription. In the Netherlands, is that also the regular way in order to arrive at these tablets, as in fact in most countries.

Due to the wave of interest in this drug, there are producers who have started to produce this agent, and the generic variants have been placed on the market. They are therefore not only cheaper, but they can also be obtained without a doctor's prescription. Indian producers and distributors through the web offer chemically identical product to modafinil, such as “Modalert.”

Not listed here bulkorders and API’s (raw powders) around $200 for 100gr.

As you are used some quotes from a forum:

Hi! I've a simple question: is it wise to use testosterone with modafinil?”

Testosterone fights fatigue in the body, and modafinil fights fatigue in the mind, is it wise to use them combined?”

If you can get your hands on both and you respond well to them, yeah, I reckon it'd be a mighty combo.”

“I wonder if the improved body performance, with the improved mind performance is good with this combo. Obviously maintaining an active life style, exercising, eating well and consuming enough Omega 3 and antioxidants.”

“Then again, I don't know whether or not the Test + Modafinil combo would shit all over your adrenals. Maybe it would.”

And a wise advise:

If this is a combo you are considering, please start with one or the other and begin with a low dose. Learn how you respond. Once you are comfortable with your findings, try the other by itself and do the same.”
