  • Massive steroids bust in Spain.

Spanish police have busted two gangs that allegedly imported and trafficked doping substances used in sports, arresting 84 people, the Interior Ministry said Sunday.

More than 700,000 doses of anabolic steroids, the blood-booster EPO and growth hormones were seized during raids in Madrid, Catalonia, Valencia, Andalusia and the Basque region, the ministry said in a statement. Among those arrested was a pharmacist who dodged legal controls to distribute the drugs without the use of medical prescriptions.

During the first quarter of 2013 the gangs introduced into Spain some 750 kilograms (1654 pounds) of drugs from China, Greece and Portugal, and marketed them in sports centers and homes, the statement said. One of the gangs was earning 11,000 euros ($14,434) a day through the illegal sale of these drugs, the statement said. It was not immediately clear when the arrests were made.

The issue of doping has also gained prominence here because of Madrid’s bid to host the 2020 Olympics. The city is competing with Istanbul and Tokyo, with the host city expected to be chosen in September.

The police have arrested 84 people and dismantled two criminal gangs accused of importing and distributing sports doping substances across Spain, the Interior Ministry said Sunday.

The raids were conducted over a period of months in 10 Spanish regions, the ministry said, with half the arrests in the country’s three largest cities: Madrid, Barcelona and Valencia.

Over all, the authorities seized about 707,000 doses of anabolic steroids, blood boosters and growth hormones. The substances were distributed through Spanish sports centers and private homes, the ministry said in a statement. One of the gangs imported the illegal products from Portugal, and the other imported its substances from Greece and China, the ministry said.

The ministry did not disclose the identities of those arrested but said they included a pharmacist. The Italian police were also involved in the operation because some of the products from Greece had traveled through Italy.

On March 8th a sports doctor of Colombian origin has been in jail in Spain. He was caught in an airport with AICAR and TB-500 in his luggage.

Doctor Beltran worked for (Continental Team) Liberty Seguros (Nuno Ribeiro, Isidro Nozal and Hector Guerra) and Xacobeo Galicia (Garcia Dapena) where he was sacked in the 2009 Vuelta, says el Pais
AICAR and TB 500m are used as new undetectable doping for the last two years
