Guardia Civil officers in Las Rozas (Madrid) have arrested four Spanish men aged between 28 and 38, who have been using their fame in the world of bodybuilding to traffic illegal anabolic steroids, which pose a health risk."Operation Gym" began back in April, when officers came across a man handing a plastic bag containing 75 dosis of strong steroids and androgens (also known as androgenic hormones or testoids) outside a gym in the Las Rozas district of the capital.The police investigation centred on the source of the illegal substances, and led police to a shop in Madrid selling nutritional supplements, which was being used as a base by the traffickers.The shop owner was the head of the trafficking gang and principal sales and distribution coordinator; two other men were responsible for enlisting new clients and supplying them with the illegal substances; the fourth member of the gang was distributing the substances in a gymnasium, where he worked as a trainer.All four were arrested on June 5th, two of them at the shop in Madrid and the other two in their homes in Las Rozas. All are well known in the sportsworld for their prestige as bodybuilders.They have all been charged with crimes against public health, and three of the four have also been charged with being part of a criminal gang.During the search of the shop in Madrid and the three private properties in Las Rozas, SeseƱa and Madrid itself, police confiscated 2,333 doses of different types of substances designed to increase muscular bulk, numerous syringes for administering them, a number of promotional leaflets about the substances and 4,365 euros in cash.Several different types of illegal anabolic steroids, to be taken either orally or injected into muscle, were amongst the substances confiscated by police.
