    Steroids Task Force

    Jun 06, 2011 19:05:11 PM

Canadian Centre for Ethics in Sport is cracking down on steroid use.

The University of Waterloo's football team was made an example of in 2010 when they were forced to cancel their season.

Now a report is almost ready for release responding to that scandal from a task-force that is lead by the Canadian Centre for Ethics in Sport.

Waterloo Regional Police Chief, Matt Torigian is on the task-force. He believes that there needs to be an enhanced education component, "because we do need to educate ourselves, educate our players, educate our community of the ill effects of steroid use and performance enhancing drugs."

Torigian says that there has been a lot of work put in to pulling people together from all over the country with a collective interest, "in making sure that our athletes from young ages to adults are making very healthy choices for themselves and ultimately for our communities."

He says that it's important to not just look at the people playing professional sports, but also the feeder leagues, especially in high school, in Waterloo Region "we work so very closely with our school boards to ensure that our young people in high school aren't looking at performance enhancing drugs as their path towards achieving some sort of accomplishment in competitive sports."

The task force is set to release a report responding to the scandal by the end of the month. It will include a clear procedure to report steroid use and an anonymous tip line. Torigian says the group is just putting the final touches on the report and should be out by the end of the month.
