  • Civil Protective Order In New Jersey

A Civil Protective Order In New Jersey courts to protect individuals from harm, harassment, or domestic violence. It provides immediate and long-term protection for victims of domestic violence, harassment, or stalking. Eligibility for a CPO includes victims, family members, or dating partners. Grounds for CPO include physical or emotional abuse, threats, intimidation, or stalking. To obtain a CPO, file a complaint with the Superior Court, provide evidence, and attend a hearing. CPOs restrict perpetrators from contacting or approaching victims, prohibit acts of domestic violence, and may grant temporary custody of children or shared residence. Violations can result in arrest and criminal charges, additional penalties or fines. Resources for obtaining a CPO include the New Jersey Coalition Against Domestic Violence (NJCADV), the National Domestic Violence Hotline, and the New Jersey Domestic Violence Hotline.
