A hundred and seventy five Canadian law enforcement officers were involved in Project Newton, an 18 month long, $1 Million dollar steroid bust. Twenty three homes and businesses were raided and 21 arrests were made (including one police officer), with law enforcement officials still rounding up suspects and predicting more to be forthcoming. Although staggering, the amount of steroids seized was only 25% of the total value of the bust, as $3 Million dollars in Meth (and some other drugs) was also found. In other words, the steroid portion of this bust, although it involved a tremendous amount of gear, apparently wasn?t the main focus of the operation.
Multiple raids were carried out on Wednesday (yesterday at the time of this writing) in Niagra, Peel, Hamilton, Halton, Haldimand County and Sudbury.
The investigation was initiated in late 2009 with an anonymous ?Crime Stoppers? tip on steroids being trafficked through supplement stores, spreading from steroids to include crystal meth. If you think about this, logically, it makes sense; Canadian health food stores can get virtually unlimited amounts of pharmaceutical grade ephedrine without raising suspicion. Herc?s (a nutritional store) and Nutrition Excellence (a distributor) were among the locations targeted.
Along with the steroids, meth, and other drugs, $140,000 in cash was also seized.
