  • Stretching

I notice how so few people stretch before a workout. Warm up sets are no replacement for a stretching routine. I have a quick full body routine and it works fine. I can remember doing squats or deads without stretching. I would pull all kinds of muscles in my inner thighs, calves or wherever. This is with plenty of warmup sets. I guess a younger guy could get away with it more than me. Just wondering are you guys all stretching or do you just jump into your training?

I deff. stretch and even use the foam roller or a soft like ball to rub the muscle, to me it seems to have helped with my growth in my arms and legs even my chest, i get some looks when I rub out my chest, guess it looks like im fondling my self, idk, but it seems to work...

I started at this almost a year in a half and was lucky to have a good instructor. Stretching first. Warm up on tread mill for 20 at a fast walk. Then warm up sets of 8 to 10
before heavy lifting. So far so good. Have had a few injury's and worked through them. Could have been worse I would think with out the warm up.

I always get a nice little warm up set then stretch right after. Then once I begin working sets I make sure to get a good stretch after every set

I read a study somewhere that showed is taking 20 minutes for muscle strength to be 100% after stretching. In my opinion, stretching should be done daily, but as a post workout type of routine. Just my thoughts.

Alot of injuries occur from stretching excessively after a set. Not exactly sure the science behind it bur i think it has to do with the muscle still being/wanting to be slightly contracted??? Not sure but, might just be my bro science haha. i do know thats how victor martinez came about that leg injury he needed surgery for a year or so ago, stretching after a set. I think it was ligament though

its like anything, if its done excessively the negatives will outweigh the positives...i have always stretched joints and warmed up the area ill be training before a workout, but not for the 20-30 mins i see ppl doing...there is a benefit to stretching after your workout which ive found has helped with soreness and flexability for the days after the training session

Over stretching is very easy to do, your right. Like ds222 says just the right amount without being excessive is fine. When I was into Kung Fu if I overdid the stretching my legs would get rubbery. Forget it, your workout is ruined. I hold the stretch ten secs, repeat once, and that's it.

I stretch myself pretty good on leg day. Helps me with the range of my reps which in turn allows a lil more weight. Stretching is great.

Same here. Thats really the only time i stretch before i touch a weight is leg day. Other days i just get a good warmup set or 2 in with about 20-25 reps then im good to go. I do try to do full body stretching on my off days but it doesnt happen sometimes
