  • Photography question???

Hey guys, just a quick question. So i like taking pictures of my Muscles!!!!! But im having trouble finding the right camera and lens size that will really bring out muscle. i have no clue about cameras, i only use my iphone. Im also a big 70's bodybuilding photography fan because it really kept true to the muscle size and proportion. Any tips or recommendations on an affordable camera and lens size that will give that george butler/arnold look? thanks!!!!!!!

that "look" has more to do with lighting than anything else. knowing how to use light takes a trained eye. it takes experience...time observing and experimenting. over time, you'll get better. i went to school for photography...and am doing nothing with my degree lol. whenever i shoot pictures of myself, i use a tripod and a self timer. i have a top level consumer camera, the rebel xti. it does everything i need and if i really wanted to, i could still shoot a wedding with it. we're talking $800 or so though. not sure how much it is now. thats such a huge limiting factor in photography. you have to spend enough money to get the features you want.

Being a professinal photographer the best advise I can give you is, READ!!!!!! like anything else knowledge is power but as a quick note I have a Canon 10d it's a prosumer camera and you could prob. pick one up on ebay for cheap (200-400) as far as lenses are concerned different lenses will give the subject different appearencs, for example a wide angle lens will give you a distorted looking image, for best results with portrait photography, which is in essence what you want to achieve, a longer focal length lens is what you want to use. ( 150mm) Again read up on it because digital cameras are different then your old 35mm cameras as far as aspect ratios on the lenses. Sounds more complicated then it really is. Good luck

good stuff. what kind of work do you do? about lens length, one of the problems i've found with something like a 100mm lens or above is, its hard to capture an entire physique unless you are outside and can get the camera far enough away. i shoot full body progress pics every 3 wks for my diet coach and even if i were to use an 80, it can be hard to get the camera far enough away.

The amazing Timothy Allen (who shoots for BBC's Human Planet show in England), makes a strong case for a 50mm prime (non-zoom) lens as being the best all around portrait lens. I use one with a Cannon 5d Mark ii and it's a really great lens. Check out Timothy's advice on shooting travel pics, it's a great article:

so since i cant afford much, i decided to buy the olympus e-pl1 for myself. think its a 14-42 mm, have no clue how it would look on the body. was wondering what size lens would create an effect like the photo of arnold i am attaching. although i have no idea, this picture seems to have been taken with a wide angle lens? but i really like the effect and how its true to size and proportion. any help of the lens size and how i could possibly re-create this photo with my own image? in this pic his arms are about 20 or 21 but look huge, compared to modern photos.
