    Tobacco-Related Cancers Fact Sheet

Lung cancer is the leading cause of cancer death in the United States for both men and women. (Source: Cancer Facts & Figures 2011)
Lung cancer is the most preventable form of cancer death in our society. (Source: Cancer Facts and Figures 2011)
Lung cancer estimates for 2010 (Source: Cancer Facts & Figures 2011):
New cases of lung cancer: 221,130
    Males: 115,060
    Females: 106,070
    Deaths from lung cancer: 156,940
    Males: 85,600
    Females: 71,340

Besides lung cancer, tobacco use also causes increased risk for cancers of the mouth, lips, nasal cavity (nose) and sinuses, larynx (voice box), pharynx (throat), esophagus (swallowing tube), stomach, pancreas, kidney, bladder, uterine cervix, and acute myeloid leukemia. (Source: Cancer Facts & Figures 2011)
In the United States, tobacco use is responsible for nearly 1 in 5 deaths; this equaled about 443,000 early deaths each year from 2000 to 2004. (Source: Cancer Facts & Figures 2011)

Tobacco use accounts for at least 30% of all cancer deaths and 87% of lung cancer deaths. (Source: Cancer Facts & Figures 2011)

Cigarette use has had a dramatic decline since the release of the first US Surgeon General's Report on Smoking and Health in 1964. Even so, about 24% of men and 18% of women still smoked cigarettes in 2009, with almost 80% of these people smoking daily. (Source: CDC Morbidity and Mortality Weekly Report, 9/10/10)

Cigarette smoking among adults age 18 and older went down 50% between 1965 and 2009 -- from 42% to 21% -- but nearly 47 million Americans still smoke. (Sources: Cancer Facts & Figures 2011; CDC Morbidity and Mortality Weekly Report, 9/10/10)

In 1997, nearly half (48%) of male high school students and more than one-third (36%) of female students reported using some form of tobacco -- cigarettes, cigars, or smokeless tobacco products -- in the past month. The percentages went down to 30% for male students and 22% for female students in 2009. (Sources: Cancer Facts & Figures 2011; CDC Morbidity and Mortality Surveillance Summary, 6/4/10)

Each year, about 3,400 non-smoking adults die of lung cancer as a result of breathing secondhand smoke. Each year secondhand smoke also causes about 46,000 deaths from heart disease in people who are not current smokers. (Source: Cancer Facts & Figures 2011)

Cigars contain many of the same carcinogens that are found in cigarettes. Cigar smoking increased 124% from 1993 to 2007. The smoking of small cigars, which look like and are often smoked like cigarettes, went up 154% during that time. Cigar smoking causes cancers of the lung, mouth, throat, larynx (voice box), esophagus (swallowing tube), and possibly the pancreas. (Source: Cancer Facts & Figures 2011)

A 2009 CDC survey found that 9% of high school girls and 19% of high school boys had smoked a cigar in the past month. (Source: CDC Youth Risk Behavior Surveillance 2009)

Among adults age 18 and older, national data from 2009 showed 7% of men and less than 1% of women were current users of smokeless tobacco. Nationwide, about 15% of US male high school students and more than 2% of female high school students were using chewing tobacco, snuff, or dip in 2009. (Sources: Cancer Facts & Figures 2011; CDC Youth Risk Behavior Surveillance 2009)

Smokeless tobacco products are a major source of cancer-causing nitrosamines and a known cause of human cancer. They increase the risk of developing cancer of the mouth and throat, esophagus (swallowing tube), and pancreas. (Source: Cancer Prevention & Early Detection Facts and Figures 2010)

Smokeless tobacco products are less lethal, but are not a safer alternative to smoking. Using smokeless tobacco can lead to nicotine addiction and dependence. Use of tobacco in any form harms health. (Source: Cancer Prevention & Early Detection Facts and Figures 2010)

Between 2000 and 2004, smoking caused more than $193 billion in annual health-related costs in the United States, including smoking-attributable medical costs and productivity losses. (Source: Cancer Facts and Figures 2011)

Alcohol abuse kills some 75,000 Americans each year and shortens the lives of these people by an average of 30 years, a U.S. government study suggested.

Excessive alcohol consumption is the third leading cause of preventable death in the United States after tobacco use and poor eating and exercise habits.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, which published the study, estimated that 34,833 people in 2001 died from cirrhosis of the liver, cancer and other diseases linked to drinking too much beer, wine and spirits.

Another 40,933 died from car crashes and other mishaps caused by excessive alcohol use.

Researchers considered any man who averaged more than two drinks per day or more than four drinks per occasion to be an excessive drinker. For women it was more than one drink per day or more than three drinks per occasion.

“These results emphasize the importance of adopting effective strategies to reduce excessive drinking, including increasing alcohol excise taxes and screening for alcohol misuse in clinical settings,” the study said.

Men accounted for 72 percent of the excessive drinking deaths in 2001, and those 21 and younger made up 6 percent of the death toll.

Light or moderate drinking can benefit a person’s health, but heavy drinking increases the risk of high blood pressure, heart disorders, certain cancers and liver disease.

Excessive drinkers are also more likely to die in car accidents. The United States aims to cut the rate of alcohol-related driving fatalities to 4 deaths per 100,000 people by 2010, a 32 percent drop from 1998.

That is the question I found myself asking while looking at a new Centers for Disease Control report that analyzes drug-overdose deaths in Florida from 2003-2009. I am guessing the answer is a resounding yes, but it’s probably a question worth asking. During that period, the death rate for prescription drugs rose 84.2 percent, from 7.3 to 13.4 per 100,000 people. (Note that these numbers represent unintentional deaths, not suicides — although when you’re talking about death by drugs, the intention isn’t always clear.) Interestingly, the death rate from illicit drugs — primarily heroin and cocaine — has fallen 21.4 percent, to 3.4 per 100,000 people.

That makes the rate of death by prescription overdose nearly 4 times that of illicit drugs — and a lot more people use prescriptions than cocaine or heroin. Meanwhile, the overdose rate from alcohol has risen 81.4 percent over the same period, to 2.8 per 100,000. This is a complex issue of course but it is interesting to me that illicit drug-related deaths fell so much, as alcohol and prescription drug-related deaths both increased substantially.

Just trying to keep things in perspective here. These "legal" drugs are causing an amazing number of deaths that are PROVEN to be from their use,yet we go our wonderful govt continues to go after AAS users due to the health risks???

I know,as the so called "medical experts" who arte against their use(as few as there are) say the "POTENTIAL" dangers of their long term use is what they are afraid of.No scientific or medical evidence or proof just theories of what they think "could" happen. The funny thing is all the lifetime users (me included) are WALKING,TALKING ,LIVING proof of AAS use and what the long term effects are.

        Doesn't add up to me.

So FIST, what you are saying is you and I can go to the bar and drink ourselves into an early grave and pop prescription pills that were lawfully prescribed like skittles until our innards liquefy and not one fuck would be given by law enforcement, government or our concerned citizen boards. On the contrary though, we can go to the gym 4,5 or 6 days a week, eat healthier than 90% of the general populous and genuinely stay away from all those legal morally acceptable killers, but possess one simple hormone enhancing compound and all of a sudden we are felons, scum and not thinking about the horrible things we are doing to our bodies? Oh and let's NOT forget the all too favorite of mine, horrible role models. So FIST, what bar we going to?

Well FIST, this goes back to the opiate of the masses; if the majority of the people felt the same way you, and so many of us do then this would never be an issue. The fact of the matter is that most people are unmotivated about working for their health thus perscriptions win, and as far as alcohol is concerned, look at prohibition and the violence that brought. If there was enough passion surronding AAS as there was alcohol we would be stopping by our local supermarket and picking it up next to the multi-vitamins, ahh wouldn't that be nice! The times shows, however, that we as a community are pretty much content with where we are even though we, at times, struggle with the ability to obtain consistent product to achieve are desired strength and physque. If there is one thing our government is a slave to that would, without a doubt, be popularity. Things may change if the popular idea of the people change. Example: marijuana

I whish I may, I whish I might, have this whish I whish tonight! LOL

I agree with you.The only difference is as you said with prohibition,MANY MANY people spoke up and fought against THAT bullshit law and it was overturned. As with anything of yesteryear, when the "PEOPLE" meaning (you and me) didn't agree with what the govt was doing they would fight against it.Thats what civil wars were made of my friend. So wishing is not the answer.Taking the stance of "WHY SHOULD I SAY ANYTHING AND RISK MYSELF" is not how things will change.

Its sad that too many use the excuse of "I DONT WANT TO GET INTO TROUBLE"! Im not saying AAS users should walk into the DEA buidling holding a needle in one hand and a bottle of Test in the other screamimh "I USE STEROIDS"!!! But how about writing a letter to your local Congressman? Or to the newspaper? Or to the TV stations? Or become active in political groups and express your opinions?? There are MANY MANY MANY "LEGAL" ways to take part in fighting against the bullshit rules and laws of a society that wishes to control its citizens.

What can one person do??? get together with a 2nd and a 3rd and a 4th,etc,etc,etc.

Does everyone understand why the govt is falling apart? Because WE'RE letting it! We are letting those in power become more powerful and take more of OUR freedoms away and we do nothing and just accept it as what it is!! Why have we become such a pussy whipped country where we hate how things have become but do nothing about it??? When the hell are people gonna say ENOUGH IS ENOUGH and fight back? WTF??? Healthcare sucks, the housing market is a fucking mess with millions of families losing thier homes, more citizens are being charged with crimes today than are not.Taxes are higher than ever and continue to go up.Gas prices are the thru the roof and billion $ corps are being bailed out for FAILING as a company!! The govt claims there is no money for the working class while we give billions to other countries???

Welfare recipients are driving around in Caddys and Lexus' and wearing tons of gold and now in the govt infinite wisdom is giving them cell phones for free and paying partially for their internet service!

Rapists and murderers and child molestors are walking the streets becuase were wrroied about their rights!!!!

Look in the mirror and ask yourself this "When is it time to FIGHT BACK"???

I totally agree with ya FIST. Our country and society is a total mess. Problem is it hasn't gotten bad enough for people to start fighting back. I am pretty sure it will get to that point sometime soon. That's why I always stock up on guns and ammo then the gun and knife show is in town. I'll be ready when the time comes. Like your signature says, Freedom is something taken.
