Athletics is a sport that is commonly associated to the use of anabolic steroids. Just recently, 8 track and field athletes from India failed the anti-doping test. It is one of the worst doping scandals in the country and the sports ministry is conducting inquiry on the extent of steroid use by their national athletes. It has also become a national issue because most of the women athletes caught positive for steroids were gold medalists in the Commonwealth and Asian Games.
British Sprinter on Steroids
And another doping case in track and field is taking headlines in the United Kingdom. British sprinter Bernice Wilson, a track athlete in the women?s division from the UK?s pool of national athletes, tested positive for anabolic steroids. This was confirmed by the UK Athletics. Wilson tested positive for steroids testosterone and clenbuterol. The sample was taken during the Bedford International Games on June 12, 2011. She competed in the 100m with 11.95 seconds.
The 27 year-old sprinter from Lincolnshire was handed a provisional suspension by the UK Anti-Doping. The suspension was backdated to July 9 and she was barred from participating in any competition while her case is being heard.
However, if she can?t defend the positive steroid test, Wilson will receive a 2-year suspension from athletics. This would mean that she will also forfeit her chance to become part of the country?s delegates in the 2012 London Olympics.
Promising Sprinter
Bernice Wilson is a promising track and field athlete for the country but her positive test for steroids will erase all her achievements in the field. She is active this year in competing in both local and international events. She ran 11.57 for the 100m at the Inter Counties Championships in Bedford in May. Wilson also qualified in the European Indoor Athletics Championships in Paris but did not succeed in reaching the final round.
Wilson also won the 100m trials for the Commonwealth Games but was not able to get into the national squad because of her failure to meet the qualifying time. Her current 7.25 seconds personal time is within the Olympics standard of 7.30 seconds.
Sports Development Officer
Bernice Wilson is currently working as a sport development officer for East Lindsey District Council. The council said that they will set up a meeting with Wilson to discuss the issue. ?East Lindsey District Council is aware of the investigation announced today by UK Athletics in relation to international athlete Bernice Wilson. The council takes this very seriously, and will be discussing this fully with Bernice, but it would be inappropriate to discuss individual staffing issues with third parties,? they said in a statement as quoted by BBC.
Clenbuterol Use by Athletes
Clenbuterol is an anabolic steroids primarily used to build muscles without the fat. It also helps increase aerobic capacity and oxygen transportation. With these qualities, clenbuterol is a choice of most athletes. Spanish cyclist Alberto Contador and several Mexican national soccer players were tested positive for clenbuterol. However, they contend that the positive test was due to meat contamination. Swimmer Jessica Hardy of US and Australian rugby player Maitua also tested positive for the drug.
Another UK track and field athlete caught using clenbuterol was hurdler Callum Priestley. He was given 2-year suspension last year and it will end on February 2012.
