He was once the center of federal investigation and served a jail term for providing professional athletes with performance enhancing drugs. Considered as one of America?s top sports scientist, Victor Conte will again plunge himself into the sports industry by sharing his expertise in performance enhancers. But this time it is not about providing athletes with designer steroids. Conte will be launching a new anti-doping agency together with other health experts in the country.
Conte told Dennis Guillermo of Boxing Scene that a new anti-doping task force will soon become operational. Its goal is to provide athletes with the most comprehensive drug testing. Conte calls this VADA (Voluntary Anti-Doping Agency.) ?We?ve been working on this since September of last year and we hope to implement it in the near future,? Conte said. However, a definite date has not been set. ?How soon that can be, whether it?s going to be in days, weeks or months, I can?t tell you. But it?s going to be in the near future.?
What is VADA?
VADA (Voluntary Anti-Doping Agency) is an organization that will provide comprehensive drug testing to professional athletes who agreed to be tested voluntarily. According to Conte, sponsors will shoulder the cost of testing so that athletes will not worry about the expenses. VADA will adopt an Olympic-style drug testing to make it more effective in catching doping athletes.
Most State athletic commissions and other professional sport leagues do not follow the WADA recommended drug testing because of the cost. However, the problem with this program is if there will be players or athletes who are willing to submit themselves to stringent drug testing. Most athletes are not in favor of blood testing and unannounced tests.
There are prominent people behind VADA according to Conte. Dr. Margaret Goodman, the former ringside physician and Medical Advisory Board Chairman for the Nevada State Athletic Commission and Dr. Flip Hamonsky, a former Nevada commissioner will be some of the key people in VADA. There?s another very high profile anti-doping world renowned expert involved. We?ll reveal who this is shortly, but he is one of the most credible people in the world of anti-doping,? added Conte.
Conte Learned From His Past Mistakes
Conte vowed that he will never engage into designer steroids again. He also partnered with the USADA to help the agency catch cheating athletes.
After the BALCO investigation, Conte put up SNAC (Scientific Nutrition for Advanced Conditioning), a supplement company providing elite athletes with top of the line nutritional supplements. Right now, many professional athletes are using these supplements and the other services provided by Conte. British sprinter Dwain Chambers and WBO/WBC bantamweight champion Nonito Donaire Jr. are just some of the athletes that gave Conte another chance to prove he?s not doing something illegal.
WADA Researching For Advanced Doping Detection Method
Meanwhile, the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) discussed in its recent meeting in Italy that they will continuously search for more advanced detection methods to catch cheating athletes. Anti-doping officials noted that manufacturers were able to produce several variations of anabolic steroids and other performance enhancing drugs. This makes it more difficult for anti-doping scientists to detect these drugs on athletes. For example, the EPO, which is a popular PED for professional cyclists, has 120 different types today.
The current test for human growth hormone is also a problem of WADA. The current method can only detect HGH within 1 or 2 days. The agency is now planning to develop tests that can detect HGH for up to 10 days.
