Scientists have made a groundbreaking discovery by detecting water on the surface of two asteroids. Using data from the retired Stratospheric Observatory for Infrared Astronomy, they found that these space rocks, named Iris and Massalia, emit a unique wavelength indicating the presence of water molecules-challenging previous assumptions that water would have evaporated from asteroids under the sun’s heat, water on asteroids. The water on these asteroids may be stored in silicate glass beads or bound to minerals, similar to how water was found on the moon’s sunlit surface.
