“Guilt isn’t always a rational thing. Guilt is a weight that will crush you whether you deserve it or not.” -Maureen Johnson
Feeling of guilt that repeatedly annoys, frustrates and depresses you can make your life miserable. There are times when you betray or hurt someone. The reason might have been anger, jealousy, selfishness, hatred, immaturity or believing that the other person deserves it. Later on you get burdened with a guilty conscience. You can not confront that person. The guilty conscience does not let you be at peace even in solidarity.
The same scenario repeats over and over in your mind. This kind of guilt leads to embarrassment and depression.
The conscience is like an instructor in you that either punishes or rewards you for your deeds. A guilty conscience is really troublesome. So you need to undo the guiltiness and make your conscience a clear one. Here are some tried and true tips that will be helpful:
Confess In Front Of A True Friend
You can share your feeling with someone who is a compassionate healer and a trustworthy advisor. Confession can heal the hidden wound. A true friend will give you a good piece of advice and will soothe your conscience. Even if he/she is unable to pinpoint the origin of guilt; at least he/she will be there to listen and just speaking the things out can relieve your soul.
Write It Down
At times there are certain dark secrets that you can not share with anybody, not even your loved ones and those secrets continuously pinch your conscience. In such a situation, writing down is a very powerful solution. Write down the stuff that is disturbing you on a piece of paper and burn it away. It will release the feeling of guilt, fear, worries, concerns etc. and you will certainly feel relieved.
Apologize to the Snubbed Person
If you are feeling guilty about something wrong you did to somebody then instead of punishing your self day and night, try to make amends. If that person is reachable; just go to him and apologize. It might seem hard to do so but believe me it is far better than burning your conscience in the fire of guilt. Apologizing will not only clear your conscience but will also elevate you in the eyes of that person.
Moreover, show mercy towards those who have ever offended you because you can well understand the result of guilty conscience.
Forgive Yourself and Move On
Stop dwelling in the past because you can not change it. Forget about the negative that happened. You are a human being and human beings make mistakes. No one is perfect. Just make a commitment that you are never going to do it again and forgive yourself. If possible, do the opposite of your previous action. If you had stolen someone’s stuff then give him a gift better than the stolen thing. If you had been the reason for your colleague’s downfall, you should somehow improve his image and appreciate his efforts in front of the boss.
Do not let the burden of guilt rest on your shoulder for it will damage your mental as well as physical health. When you have a clear and healthy conscience, you can look at the brighter side of the picture and you can value the good in people
