  • Intermittent Fasting-great results

There are a couple prior posts on this, but nothing in depth. Someone recently mentioned it on OLM and I decided to give it a try.

The basic concept is 8 hours to feed/16 hours to fast. There is much discussion that this eating method will allow for fat loss and muscle gain at the same time, or at least the preservation of lean mass. I went to http://www.1percentedge.com/ifcalc/ to calculate my macros.

Once the macros are calculated, you can set your goals and there are several pre-programed choices. As my main goal is fat loss (with minimal lean mass loss), I customized mine a bit, so basically here is what the program came up with:

Weight training day: 3400 calories. This is referred to as +-0 or the calories I need to maintain my weight.

Non weight training day. -30% maintenance calories which is 2390.

    I'm eating between 11am-7pm.

This calorie deficit puts me on track to lose nearly one pound per week (.88), although it has been faster these first couple of weeks.

My energy has been great since starting this, and rarely do I find myself to be hungry. I wake at 7am so it doesn't seem too bad to go four hours until my first meal. I actually seem to have more trouble getting enough calories in the 8 hour window to hit my goal, especially training days.

What also pleases me is that I don't seem to be sacrificing lean mass (the mirror says I have actually gained lean mass, but this could be due to losing the excess adipose tissue), and my lifting weights have not suffered.

Anyone else tried this? What were your experiences with it? If this continues to work for me, and anyone is interested, I may keep a weekly/biweekly log of how it's going.

I've been doing IF since December. I really like it a lot. I like eating bigger meals

Hey Zole, good to hear someone else doing it. I'm still following it...I don't even think of it as a diet, but just a way I eat now. I think it blows conventional theory about lean mass building and fat loss right out the window, and I'll tell you why.

Four weeks ago I was wearing a button down shirt to a slightly dressy event I went to. It was too tight in the gut, and I ended up wearing a shirt underneath and leaving it open. I wore that same shirt buttoned yesterday with no undershirt and it fit comfortably. The scale tells me I've lost 4 pounds in those four weeks. (which is pretty on track with my scheduled .88 loss per week) My clothes are telling me its a bigger loss than that however. So, I'm pretty convinced I've been able to lose some fat and add some lean mass at the same time. The mirror and some photographs recently taken seem to verify this.

I've inadvertently been following this plan with great results, they may be due to cleanliness of diet though. I don't eat till round noon then have last dinner at 8 or so I've dropped two pant sizes and only down 4 lbs

Someone who fasts will lose pounds and therefore conclude it's fat loss. Actual loss in weight doesn't mean anything. I don't like intermittent fasting because you can't control your metabolism as well as if you were eating smaller but more often. Plus you can train your metabolism so much you can actually gradually make your meals bigger...you can't while on IF. Anyway to each his own but IF definitely isn't the most efficient way to lose weight.

I personally know its fat loss (pant size) and muscle gain scale pounds...if I dropped two sizes not working out I'd call that what 10lbs I've lost 4

Bear in mind this is without gear(still waiting) not sure what that does to the equation just thought maybe it was pertinent...and two pant sizes little generous

Metabolism is trained, as simple as that. You can make your metabolism slow as fuck, or a burning machine, it's your call. Well if it does work for you then good, It's just in my opinion a riskier way of doing it and you can still lose muscles while working out.. but if you manage to keep your strength, that everywhere then it's good

This is a great question that would add another unknown into the equation. You would think the added recuperative abilities of aas would enhance the lean mass saving/building properties of IF. But I guess one won't know until he tries it.

I have been here for a while now, but I too have yet to run a cycle. I told myself I would get to a certain weight or bodyfat percentage before I run an aas cycle. I guess that will be my reward for achieving my goal.

A good diet should be part of your lifestyle or at least close to it, Fasting never works well long term, If you learn to cycle your Macros you can get a similiar result but actually alter your metabolism over time. Ie varying your carbs, protiens fats

There is actually a ton of science pointing to the fact that eating small meals throughout the day doesn't actually boost your metabolism. There's also science showing that fasting can. It also keeps blood glucose levels more stable and manipulates the release of insulin.

Yesterday's fast went all the way to 5pm for me. It felt amazing being able to eat that 20oz porterhouse with my sides and not worrying that I had too much in one meal.
